On the Rocks

8/22/2021

On the Rocks...Bourbon, Tequila, Scotch, and Gin...Oops, not that kind of "on the rocks".  I was so impressed by the variety of rocks that I saw at Spray Park, in Mount Rainier National Park, that I decided to make an entire blog post to share images of the most interesting varieties.
I spent Saturday exploring Spray Park in the northwestern corner of Mount Rainier National Park.  I had never been in this corner of Mount Rainier before and, wow, it has a different vibe than the other more touristy areas of the park such as Paradise or Sunrise.  It felt more rugged, more pristine, and significantly less populated.  The terrain also seemed more varied (maybe because it was new to me), but it was really fun to spend the day exploring to see what I could find next!

I hiked through forest, across meadows, down a few lingering snowfields, and up/over/around every type of rock imaginable (or seemed like it).  Speaking of varied terrain, one of the most interesting things that I noticed was all the different types of rocks and how the rocks changed every few minutes of my hike.  There were so many rocks, and such variation, that I started taking photos of just the rocks!  I would love to be able to identify all of the different rock types, but unfortunately I do not have that knowledge (yet).  Time to study up on my geology!

View the slideshow below for a sample of my "on the rocks" experience.
